Fiji to Reform Police Act With UN Backing to Restore Public Trust

The validation of the findings from the Review of the Fiji Police Act took place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, a significant milestone in modernizing Fiji’s policing framework. During the session, Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua emphasized the necessity of creating a Police Act that remains relevant, people-focused, and aligns with international standards and the broader governmental vision.

This initiative is bolstered by support from the United Nations Human Rights Office and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Ms. Heike Alefsen, Regional Representative of the UN Human Rights Office, elaborated on the importance of reforming the Police Act, noting that such changes transcend mere legislative amendments. “Reforming the Police Act is not only about law; it is about trust and building confidence in the police,” Alefsen stated, highlighting that every Fijian should have confidence that their rights will be respected and protected by law enforcement.

The review team for this initiative comprises representatives from the Office of the Solicitor-General, the Ministry of Policing, and partners from UN Human Rights, UNDP, and UN Women. The anticipated legislation is set to replace the existing 1965 Police Act with more contemporary stipulations that reflect modern policing needs and societal expectations.

This ongoing review aligns with previous efforts aimed at bringing the policing standards in Fiji in line with modern human rights practices, ensuring the police service is adequately equipped to handle present-day challenges. Recent consultations indicated key themes such as enhancing community policing, clearly defining police authority, and improving law enforcement practices through the adoption of modern technology.

The government’s commitment to reform demonstrates a hopeful outlook for the future of policing in Fiji. By encouraging public involvement in shaping legislative changes, the initiative aims not only to restore public trust but also to foster a more accountable and effective police force that serves all Fijians equitably, ultimately creating a safer and more secure environment.
