Fiji to Reform Energy Laws After IRENA Review Signals Renewables Push

Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has announced the completion of a legislative and regulatory gap analysis for Fiji’s energy sector, with assistance from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This analysis aims to facilitate a just and inclusive energy transition in the nation. During a recent Parliament session, Minister Tuisawau described the study’s assessment of Fiji’s existing energy laws and policies, identified as insufficient in promoting renewable energy and low in private sector engagement.

He pointed out that the current Electricity Act does not adequately prioritize renewable energy, restricting competition, investment, and access to the sector. To address these issues, the Ministry is engaging with stakeholders to discuss the report’s findings and to potentially inform a Cabinet submission on necessary reforms.

In addition to legislative efforts, Tuisawau highlighted the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF), which has garnered around $18 million in funding, supported by Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. This initiative aims to enhance rural electrification through solar PV-diesel hybrid systems, targeting approximately 300 communities across Fiji.

Tuisawau has reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels, expanding renewable energy sources, and providing safe and affordable electricity to every household in the country. This ambitious vision aligns with ongoing nationwide projects, which focus on building efficient energy infrastructure and enhancing access for underserved communities.

The government’s multi-faceted approach to renewable energy development, including significant investments and proactive legislative analysis, demonstrates a dedicated effort toward a sustainable future. As Fiji navigates its energy transition, the hope is to create meaningful change that not only meets current demands but also paves the way for enhanced economic opportunities and environmental sustainability for future generations.
