Fiji to Overhaul Police Act with UN Backing to Restore Trust

A significant step towards the modernization of Fiji’s policing framework occurred at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, where the findings from the Review of the Fiji Police Act were validated. Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua underscored the need for a Police Act that is relevant, focused on the needs of the community, and aligns with international standards as well as the broader government vision.

This crucial initiative is supported by both the United Nations Human Rights Office and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Ms. Heike Alefsen, the Regional Representative of the UN Human Rights Office, emphasized that reforming the Police Act goes beyond mere legal modifications. “Reforming the Police Act is not only about law; it is about trust and building confidence in the police,” Alefsen stated. She highlighted that every Fijian should feel assured that their rights will be respected and protected by law enforcement.

The review team consists of representatives from the Office of the Solicitor-General, the Ministry of Policing, and partners from UN Human Rights, UNDP, and UN Women. The proposed legislation aims to replace the outdated 1965 Police Act with contemporary provisions that address the modern needs of policing and the expectations of society.

This review process reflects ongoing efforts to align policing standards in Fiji with modern human rights practices, ensuring that law enforcement is well-equipped to confront present-day challenges. Recent consultations have revealed key themes, such as the enhancement of community policing initiatives, clear definitions of police authority, and the adoption of modern technology to improve law enforcement practices.

The government’s commitment to this reform signifies a positive and hopeful future for policing in Fiji. By promoting public involvement in shaping legislative changes, the initiative seeks not only to rebuild public trust but also to cultivate a police force that is more accountable and effective in serving all Fijians, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure environment for everyone.
