Fiji to Modernize Local Government Act with Draft Local Government Amendment Bill 2025

Fiji to Modernize Local Government Act with Draft Local Government Amendment Bill 2025

The Cabinet has approved the results of the review conducted on the Local Government Act of 1972, which serves as the foundational legislation for the creation, governance, and administration of municipal councils. This Act outlines the powers, responsibilities, and functions of local authorities, enabling them to efficiently provide essential services to their communities.

The comprehensive review focused on multiple aspects, including the structure of the legislation, the operational dynamics of municipal councils, the roles and responsibilities of councillors, and the involvement of the Ministry of Local Government. The aim is to update and modernize the law to ensure that councils can effectively address contemporary needs while enhancing local governance throughout towns and cities in Fiji.

As a result of this review, a draft Local Government Amendment Bill for 2025 has been developed. The Bill will soon enter a public consultation phase, allowing communities, stakeholders, and ratepayers to voice their opinions and suggestions before it is finalized. This participatory approach reflects a commitment to inclusive governance, ensuring that the voices of citizens are heard and considered in the legislative process.

By modernizing the Local Government Act, the government aims to strengthen the capacity of councils to serve their populations more effectively, paving the way for improved service delivery and greater community engagement.
