Fiji is set to revamp its immigration system following an extensive review of its immigration laws that highlights the necessity for clear, inclusive policies while ensuring national security and adhering to global best practices in immigration services.
Siromi Turaga, Acting Attorney General and Minister for Justice, commented on the importance of this review, stating, “Today we reach the end point of an undertaking forged through teamwork, dialogue, and a collective resolve to craft a modern, equitable, and secure immigration system for Fiji.” He emphasized that the review’s recommendations will steer the government in creating a robust, efficient, and fair immigration framework that truly serves the Fijian populace.
This review is the result of a collaborative effort among the International Organization for Migration, the Ministry of Immigration, and the Fiji Law Reform Commission. Its goal is to modernize the country’s immigration practices to align with national priorities while meeting international standards.
The initiative addresses urgent concerns regarding outdated laws that fail to address contemporary challenges such as human trafficking and inefficiencies in visa processing. Previous discussions have underscored the critical need for reform, especially given the reported doubling of illegal immigration rates in Fiji over the past year, which has raised significant security concerns.
