Fiji is poised to enhance its national e-Transport system with the introduction of a new QR Pay feature, set to launch on October 20. This initiative aims to streamline public transport payments, providing commuters with a more efficient and user-friendly payment option. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, announced the upcoming feature, which will be available on both Android and iOS platforms.
Kamikamica emphasized that the QR Pay functionality will offer Fijians greater flexibility and convenience in managing their travel payments. He stated, “The QR Pay feature will give Fijians more flexibility and convenience in how they pay for their travel.” Currently, the e-Transport platform records impressive statistics, with over 128,000 users accessing it daily and approximately 320,000 active users monthly, alongside 492,000 registered cards.
The introduction of this new payment method marks a significant step in Fiji’s broader digital transformation journey. Kamikamica remarked on the importance of digital innovation, indicating that it plays a crucial role in simplifying daily activities for citizens and fostering an inclusive environment. This follows the previous announcement of a real-time tracking app for bus card payments, aimed at improving transparency and user trust.
With the public transport system facing challenges in the past related to the electronic ticketing rollout and connectivity issues, the government is focusing on solutions that enhance user experience. Collaborations with various telecommunications providers and ongoing infrastructure improvements are seen as essential steps in addressing these issues.
As the QR Pay system is introduced, it reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing Fiji’s public transportation while anticipating a shift towards more sustainable and inclusive travel experiences. The hopeful outlook surrounding these advancements indicates that Fiji is on the right track toward creating a more efficient and accessible transportation system that meets the needs of all its residents, enhancing everyday life across the archipelago.
