Habitat for Humanity Fiji is set to launch a child wellbeing centre through a newly established partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection. This initiative aims to provide essential support to children living and working on the streets across Fiji’s four divisions. The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement, which underscores a mutual commitment to enhance child protection systems in accordance with the Child Care and Protection Act 2024 and the Child Justice Act 2024.
The child wellbeing centre is envisioned as a safe and rehabilitative space for children who require care and protection. It will serve as a central hub for coordinated interventions, offering access to vital social services, psychosocial support, referral pathways, and reintegration programs.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, emphasized that this partnership is a significant step towards safeguarding vulnerable children. She reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders, development partners, and civil society organizations to ensure every child in Fiji grows up in a safe and supportive environment. This initiative aligns with national priorities aimed at preventing neglect, exploitation, and abuse while tackling the root causes that lead children to the streets.
Sangita Kumar, Interim National Director of Habitat for Humanity Fiji, expressed pride in the partnership, highlighting the union of governmental influence and community expertise. She noted that this collaboration produces sustainable infrastructure that fosters child development, safety, and dignity, while also enhancing community resilience and inclusive social development.
Construction of the child wellbeing centre will commence once the necessary technical and implementation arrangements are finalized. Although the specific location of the centre has not yet been disclosed, its design will cater to the unique needs of children requiring care and protective services. This initiative offers hope for a more supportive environment for vulnerable children across Fiji, emphasizing the value of collaboration in tackling social issues.
