The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has officially forged a significant partnership with E-Tech Engineering Pte Ltd in a $4.5 million initiative aimed at expanding the Nasinu Cemetery. This proactive move is set to create approximately 17,000 new burial plots, addressing an urgent need for increased burial space in the region.
The contract was signed yesterday by Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva and E-Tech Engineering Director Ashneel Singh. The planning for this project has spanned almost three years, largely due to community concerns about cemetery capacity and various challenges linked to documentation and financial processes.
Moceisuva expressed his appreciation toward E-Tech Engineering for their dedication throughout this extended period. “This has been a long-standing project, and at times it was frustrating when we could not implement it due to documentation and financial system issues,” he remarked. He underscored the importance of this expansion for the local community, warning that current cemetery capacity is dangerously low and could reach full utilization within this quarter.
The FCS anticipates that the new burial plots will adequately meet community needs for up to seven years, based on current mortality rates. This partnership and financial commitment are deemed essential for addressing Fiji’s long-term burial requirements as the population continues to grow.
Ashneel Singh, for his part, thanked the FCS for their trust in E-Tech Engineering, and announced that construction preparations are already underway. “We truly appreciate the confidence placed in our company for such an important project that directly impacts the public, and we assure you that we will carry out the work proactively and with due diligence until completion,” he said.
With construction expected to begin shortly, this initiative marks a hopeful step forward in addressing the community’s burial needs, ensuring that the growing population of Fiji has sustainable and accessible burial options for years to come.
