Chinese national Yin Qing Qing is facing deportation after serving a 10-month prison sentence for illegal employment while on a tourist visa, as confirmed by Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto. This routine procedure applies to all foreigners convicted of crimes in Fiji, reflecting the country’s legal obligations towards maintaining order.

Qing was sentenced this week by the Suva Magistrate’s Court after authorities discovered a total of $6,844 in cash across her hotel room at the Yue Lai Hotel and her MPAiSA account, which are believed to be derived from unlawful activities during her stay.

Her legal issues began in September of the previous year, when she and co-accused Joshua Ravula faced serious charges related to the possession of 42.95 grams of methamphetamine. However, those charges were dismissed in December by the Director of Public Prosecutions, citing insufficient evidence, leaving Ravula to face only the charges concerning the drugs.

Minister Naupoto emphasized that Fiji will maintain strict deportation protocols for foreign visitors who engage in illegal activities, reinforcing the importance of adhering to local laws. This case highlights the consequences of unlawful behavior abroad and underscores Fiji’s dedication to applying its legal frameworks uniformly. Such measures not only protect the integrity of the nation’s legal system but also serve as a deterrent to others who might consider similar actions while visiting.
