The Commissioner’s North Office in Labasa, alongside contractor Engineering Express Logistics Limited, is actively advancing the construction of 37 homes in Nadoiviri, Dreketi, Macuata. This project aims to provide stable housing for families that have been living in makeshift tents for nearly five years since being displaced by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021.
During a recent Macuata Provincial Council meeting, concerns were voiced regarding the prolonged stay in temporary accommodations, prompting the Divisional Planning Officer North, Setareki Dakuiboca, to reassure council members and villagers that the construction is on track for completion by next year. He added that efforts are being made to assist families in preparing for the upcoming cyclone season, which runs from November to April. “We are working with the contractors to complete construction work by next year,” Dakuiboca stated. Additionally, he emphasized the precautions being taken, including the provision of new tents as needed, with a goal to relocate families as soon as possible.
Macuata Women’s Representative, Adi Samanunu Katonivere, acknowledged the contributions from overseas groups but stressed the need for more collaboration within the province to support the women affected by this prolonged displacement. “While we recognize the efforts of the government and the Provincial Administrator’s Office, our primary concern is for the women and their daily lives. Living in tents for almost five years is incredibly challenging,” she remarked.
Dakuiboca further revealed that the Commissioner’s Office is also implementing financial stability initiatives for families as they transition to their new homes, collaborating with non-governmental organizations to provide income-generating programs. The relocated families, comprising 37 households from Nabavatu Village, have faced significant hardships and are now looking forward to moving into permanent residences once construction concludes.
This initiative not only addresses the immediate housing needs of those affected but also reflects a broader commitment by the Fijian government to enhance disaster resilience and improve living conditions in vulnerable communities. The investment of approximately $5.9 million from the Relocation of Communities Trust Fund underscores this commitment, offering hope to families as they prepare for a more stable future. As construction progresses, the strength and unity of the Nabavatu community shine through, showcasing their resilience and determination to overcome the adversities they have faced.
