Fiji to Build More Secondary Schools to Curb Rural Dropouts

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has expressed concern over the ongoing challenge of school dropouts in Fiji’s remote rural areas, despite significant governmental support aimed at improving educational access. Speaking at the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting, Radrodro highlighted that government initiatives such as providing funding for school fees, transportation, and textbooks have yet to effectively curb dropout rates, particularly in isolated regions.

Radrodro called on parents and communities to be more vigilant about their children’s education and to actively engage in efforts to reintegrate students who have left school. To further enhance accessibility, he announced plans to establish additional secondary schools in districts like Nakorosule, Naqali, and a choice between Colo-i-Suva or Cunningham. These new facilities aim to reduce distance-related barriers by bringing educational institutions closer to families’ homes.

The minister’s initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that governmental aid directly benefits schools and communities by equipping them with essential resources. During his countrywide community visits, Radrodro has persistently urged a collaborative effort among villagers, parents, leaders, and educational authorities to elevate Fiji’s educational standards and address the rising dropout rates.

Complementing these efforts, the government is actively implementing TSLS free loan schemes and expanding vocational training institutions to provide diverse educational pathways for students. Radrodro’s recent initiatives underscore a commitment to making education in Fiji not only more accessible but also sustainable and inclusive, particularly for underprivileged and isolated communities.
