Fiji Times at 150 Sparks Students to Look Back at History

Fiji Times at 150 Book Handover Sparks History Talks at Natabua High School

Students at Natabua High School were recently reminded of the crucial role history plays in shaping the future, during an event marking the handover of “The Fiji Times at 150” book. Authored by Dr. Anurag Subramani, this book offers a perspective on Fiji’s history through the lens of its longest-running newspaper, The Fiji Times. The handover was officiated by Fred Wesley, the editor-in-chief of The Fiji Times.

Virendra Sharma, the principal of Natabua High School, emphasized the importance of understanding historical events, particularly those from 15 to 20 years ago, to cultivate wisdom and enhance future decision-making skills. Mr. Sharma highlighted how such knowledge provides essential lessons from the past, allowing students to learn from mistakes and progress.

Fred Wesley also underscored The Fiji Times’ storied history since its inception in 1869, noting the various challenges it has faced over the decades. He reinforced Mr. Sharma’s view that history’s significance lies in its capacity to help navigate future obstacles by reflecting on previous challenges and triumphs.

Dr. Anurag Subramani, the book’s author, previously advocated for locals to author their histories to counter misrepresentation by outsiders. His work, “The Fiji Times at 150,” uniquely shines light on the narratives of ordinary Fijians rather than focusing solely on political figures. This approach promotes a more inclusive historical record, enriching Fiji’s cultural narrative and supporting broader movements to preserve indigenous stories and languages.

The event at Natabua High School highlights a growing educational initiative in Fiji, underscoring history’s role in forming personal and communal identities. It encourages students to engage with their historical legacies, fostering a stronger appreciation for cultural heritage and promoting community pride and cohesion.

Overall, the handover of the book represents a positive step in Fiji’s educational sphere, aiming to bridge generations with their past and instilling them with a sense of responsibility to uphold historical lessons.
