This initiative was announced by Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua during a parliamentary session, emphasizing its alignment with the efforts of the Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC). The introduction of surveillance aircraft is anticipated to bolster Fiji’s ability to monitor and safeguard its extensive maritime territory through integrated air and sea operations.
Minister Tikoduadua expressed optimism regarding the potential for an enhanced alliance with Australia, which could include a treaty fostering deeper defense cooperation between the two nations. Although discussions are in the early stages, the minister highlighted the substantial opportunity this represents for Fiji, indicating that such an arrangement could significantly elevate the country’s capabilities beyond current partnerships, particularly those within the Defence Cooperation Program.
