Fiji Taxi Operators Push for Fare Increase Amid Rising Costs

The Fiji Taxi Association is advocating for an increase in taxi fares, citing rising operational costs as a key reason. Newly-elected trustee, Mohammed Khan, emphasized the urgent need for this fare adjustment, highlighting that the costs associated with maintaining a taxi, including fuel, vehicle parts, driver salaries, and general upkeep, have significantly increased. Khan pointed out that while supermarket prices have risen, taxi fares have remained stagnant, creating an imbalance for operators.

Nadi district secretary, Jiten Kumar, supported this call and encouraged association members to unify in their appeal to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) for a fare increase. The submission to FCCC has been extended to October 10, with hopes of securing a favorable outcome.

This demand for a fare increase is part of broader concerns within Fiji’s taxi industry. Previous reports have underscored challenges such as competition from unregulated “pirate taxis” that undermine licensed operators. This proliferation of illegal taxis, often operating without fare meters, not only impacts the earnings of legitimate drivers but also poses safety risks to passengers. Additionally, the discussion around the taxi fare increase aligns with ongoing dialogues about reinstating a more structured base taxi system to enhance service reliability and reduce congestion.

The FCCC’s recent initiatives reflect a commitment to aligning public transport fares with economic realities while protecting consumer interests. As the industry navigates these challenges, there remains a sense of hope that collaborative efforts between taxi operators and authorities will yield solutions that ensure a sustainable and equitable future for transportation in Fiji. These changes aim to improve service standards and operational efficiency, benefiting both drivers and passengers alike.
