The Fijian government is set to make significant strides in mobile and internet connectivity in Taveuni, as part of the next phase of the national digital infrastructure initiative. Minister for Communications, Iowane Naivalurua, presented these plans in Parliament, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing coverage in areas struggling with poor or nonexistent mobile signals, particularly in the island’s more remote regions.
Currently, Taveuni has six mobile towers and five digital towers that cater to over 9,000 active SIM card users. While most of the island benefits from 4G LTE coverage, the government is keen on targeting remaining areas, known as “red spots,” which lack sufficient connectivity as identified in established network maps. This initiative forms part of a larger national strategy aimed at tackling connectivity issues in both rural and urban locales, especially as Fiji prepares to transition to 5G technology.
The government’s approach includes significant investments through the Universal Service Obligation Project, which is funded by a special levy imposed on licensed telecommunications operators to improve communications access in underserved areas. Additionally, Naivalurua announced the launch of a satellite-based Wi-Fi system that employs Low Earth Orbit technology similar to Starlink, supported by a budget of $3 million. This innovative project has already successfully connected 126 rural sites in Fiji and is poised to extend its services to Taveuni and neighboring outer islands.
Fiji’s national 5G rollout will occur in three phases, initially focusing on urban centers like Suva and Nadi within this year and into next. Subsequently, it will expand to include Labasa and Savusavu between 2026 and 2027, with plans to reach additional remote locations, including Taveuni, by 2028.
Previous initiatives have also highlighted the government’s determination to eliminate the digital divide by leveraging modern connectivity solutions, such as those provided by Starlink, to enhance internet access for isolated communities. This approach is an integral part of the government’s broader vision for achieving digital equity, ultimately encouraging socio-economic development and inclusivity across Fiji.
