The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has successfully secured both a Restraining Order and a Forfeiture Order targeting properties associated with significant drug-related activities as part of its ongoing efforts to combat organized crime. These actions, carried out under the Proceeds of Crime Act, involve Alzaid Ali and Grace Katia Luivoliga, whose assets have been frozen despite the absence of concluded criminal proceedings.
Both individuals are currently facing drug-related charges before the Lautoka High Court. The court orders include the seizure of two vehicles—a white Honda Fit Shuttle and a black Audi—alongside significant financial assets held in Westpac bank accounts: $75,831 from Alzaid Ali and $23,076.73 from Grace Katia Luivoliga. An additional $6,300 found in Ali’s possession at his arrest has also been seized. This legal action represents a strategic effort by the ODPP to dismantle financial benefits derived from illicit activities, highlighting the importance of asset forfeiture as a tool in fighting organized crime.
The recent measures taken by the ODPP are part of a broader campaign in Fiji to address drug-related crimes and break the financial networks that support them. In parallel, another civil forfeiture concerning properties connected to a major drug case involving over 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine is under review, signifying an ongoing commitment to eradicating organized crime by choking off its financial resources.
These efforts by Fiji’s prosecution authorities indicate a proactive and hopeful trajectory towards enhancing public safety. By attacking the economic foundations of criminal enterprises, the ODPP aims to disrupt and ultimately dismantle the structures enabling illegal activities, thereby working towards safer, more secure communities.
