The Cabinet has officially approved the engagement of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to serve as the implementing agency under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Umbrella Programme for two significant national biodiversity projects in Fiji. This strategic initiative aims to enhance the country’s commitment to biodiversity management and sustainability, with a total funding allocation of USD $450,000.
The first project focuses on updating Fiji’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for the period of 2025–2030 and involves preparing the 7th National Report. This endeavor is aligned with global biodiversity standards and commitments, emphasizing the importance of preserving Fiji’s unique ecosystems.
Additionally, a Small-Scale Funding Agreement worth USD $30,000 has been established to support the country’s first National Report on the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol. This protocol addresses critical issues surrounding access to genetic resources and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization.
These initiatives are designed to bolster Fiji’s institutional and technical capabilities, ensuring high-quality reporting and guiding national actions to protect biodiversity while promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. Fiji has previously initiated collaborative efforts through projects like the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, which also received GEF funding.
