In the last five years, Fiji has witnessed a staggering 10,111 reported cases of child abuse and neglect. Approximately 60 to 70 percent of these cases have involved neglect, physical abuse, or sexual abuse, highlighting a serious issue that affects not only children but the entire community. As Fiji observes the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and World Children’s Day, the government is stepping up its commitment to protect its young citizens.
Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, points out that the increasing numbers represent a grave concern that requires urgent attention. This year, the Fijian government introduced two significant laws: the Child Safety and Protection Act and the Child Justice Act. These laws are designed to reinforce child protection efforts and to ensure that a child-focused framework is implemented across the nation.
The Child Safety and Protection Act articulates precise safeguards and responsibilities for preventing and responding to abuse and neglect, prioritizing the welfare of children in all actions taken. Meanwhile, the Child Justice Act establishes a justice system that focuses on rehabilitation and protection for minors in conflict with the law, aiming to treat them with dignity rather than punishing them.
Kiran emphasizes that every child deserves safety, care, and an environment free from violence and exploitation. She advocates for treating children as partners in their future, urging that their voices should be integrated into policies and legislative decisions that influence their lives.
Moreover, the Department of Children is taking proactive measures by creating frangipani treehouses and child-friendly spaces in community areas and workplaces. These initiatives are designed to nurture emotional growth and provide secure learning environments, offering a practical investment in the future of children across Fiji.
The minister calls on all facets of the community, including parents, teachers, caregivers, and community leaders, to unite under this year’s theme: “Nurturing Minds, Protecting Futures.” This collaboration is essential for working towards reducing violence and fostering a supportive environment for children’s well-being, which is imperative for constructing a safer Fiji.
