Fiji’s taekwondo community proudly marked a significant milestone as a 13-member delegation from the Civic Taekwondo Academy, under the guidance of the Fiji Taekwondo Association (FTA), returned triumphantly from the TUNZ Taekwondo tournament held in Wellington, New Zealand. The team showcased their exceptional talent, clinching a remarkable total of seven gold, 16 silver, and one bronze medal. This achievement is a testament to their rigorous two-month training regimen and highlights the increasing proficiency of taekwondo in Fiji.
National coach Neelu Nand expressed immense pride in the athletes, commending their natural abilities and unwavering determination. He pointed out that their performance at the tournament not only showcased Fiji’s taekwondo capabilities on a global stage but also signifies important progress as the nation looks ahead to the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
Leading the team was Olympian Venice Traill, who shared her admiration for the younger competitors who were participating in their first international event featuring electronic scoring. Traill emphasized the collaborative spirit that led to their success, stating, “This campaign shows what is possible when athletes, coaches, and supporters work together with one vision.” The medals earned at the tournament signify Fiji’s enhanced visibility in the world of taekwondo, encouraging aspiring athletes to engage with the association and pursue their dreams.
The Wellington tournament not only resulted in a commendable medal tally but also offered invaluable international exposure, reinforcing Fiji’s standing in the taekwondo community. This participation comes at a pivotal time for the sport in Fiji, particularly with milestones such as Venice Traill and Lolohea Naitasi set to represent the country at the 2024 Olympic Games—the first female athletes from Fiji to compete in taekwondo.
As the community unites in support of its athletes, the backing from sponsors and dedication from local clubs will be crucial for future success. The accomplishments at the Wellington tournament herald a bright future for young Fijian taekwondo practitioners, opening doors to global recognition and inspiring the next generation to reach for excellence in the sport.
