The Fijian government plans to tackle overcrowding in remand facilities as the Fiji Police Force intensifies its operations against hard drugs. Acting Prime Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening border controls and improving police capability, addressing what he termed as “taking the bull by the horns.”
Overcrowding has become a pressing issue for the Fiji Corrections Services, with the capacity to provide adequate healthcare and accommodation being severely stretched. Earlier this year, warnings were issued about how overcrowding compromised the effectiveness of services for inmates. The Suva Remand Centre, in particular, was noted for housing numbers double its intended capacity.
Despite criticisms suggesting that the current government blames previous administrations for the overcrowding crisis, Prof. Prasad clarified that the focus is on finding solutions rather than placing blame. He acknowledged lapses in the system and expressed the need for patience as solutions are implemented. He assured that resources would be allocated as necessary to manage the situation and potentially increase funding to accommodate the rising number of inmates.
Efforts to address this growing problem have included discussions on judicial reforms and potential changes to bail conditions to alleviate pressure on remand facilities. Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Fiji Corrections Commissioner, has been a key advocate for such reforms, recognizing that overcrowding not only affects remandees but also places undue stress on correctional staff.
