Verdict Looms in Suva Supermarket Robbery Trial

Fiji Supermarket Robbery Trial Nears Verdict

The trial of Leone Lesumailepanoni, a farmer accused of robbing the Alison Supermarket at Laucala Beach Estate near Suva, is approaching its conclusion. The proceedings began on October 6, 2025, and involve four counts of aggravated robbery stemming from an incident that took place on December 2 of the previous year.

Lesumailepanoni, along with two accomplices, is alleged to have carried out a violent robbery during which they restrained a taxi driver, leaving him confined in the boot of his vehicle. Armed with cane knives, the group threatened supermarket staff and customers, resulting in the theft of approximately $24,000 from one customer, $100 from another, and $1,650.35 from the supermarket itself.

In a recent court session last Thursday, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe heard closing arguments from both the prosecution and defense. State lawyer Simone Seruvatu presented testimonies from six witnesses, while Legal Aid lawyer Timoci Varinava called upon Lesumailepanoni and an alibi witness. It is noteworthy that Sosiveta Raura, a co-defendant initially charged alongside Lesumailepanoni, had his charges dismissed earlier this year.

As the trial draws to a close, Lesumailepanoni remains in custody, with a verdict expected to be delivered on November 20. The case has garnered attention due to the violent nature of the crime, highlighting concerns around public safety and the imperative for robust security measures in commercial areas to prevent such incidents.

The unfolding legal scenario serves as a significant reminder of the justice system’s commitment to accountability and community safety. With each advancement in the case, there is a collective hope that justice will be achieved, reinforcing the necessity to protect both customers and employees in public venues.
