Fiji Summit Urges Deep Health Reforms to Put the Poor First and Shape the Next Government

During the Fiji Health Transformation Summit in Suva, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu emphasized the crucial role of genuine investment in healthcare, particularly for the impoverished. He highlighted that prioritizing healthcare is not only a moral obligation but also a vital political necessity.

According to President Lalabalavu, addressing healthcare must be the foremost priority on the national agenda, which requires making tough decisions regarding resource allocation, including areas such as public safety, drug issues, and small business support. However, he cautioned that the demand for hospital resources will persist, as communities rely heavily on these essential services. He metaphorically compared hospitals to “a shark with its mouth wide open, ready to chew whatever comes before it.”

The President called on health officials to anticipate future needs and ensure that reforms are aligned with the requirements of everyday Fijians, urging delegates to prioritize the welfare of the poor. He stated, “Let the people come first. Bring in the poor — that is what will guarantee the next government remains in government.”

Moreover, President Lalabalavu expressed confidence that the efforts and discussions at the summit will help establish a health system that adequately serves all Fijians, paving the way for a more inclusive and effective healthcare framework in the future.
