Fiji’s Sugar Minister, Charan Jeath Singh, is facing intense scrutiny from Mahendra Chaudhry, the general secretary of the National Farmers Union. Chaudhry has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to reconsider Singh’s position, branding him a “proven disaster” for allegedly exploiting his office for questionable overseas trips while trying to address the myriad challenges faced by the struggling sugar industry.
In a vigorous defense, Singh dismissed Chaudhry’s criticism, questioning his relevance in the political arena and asserting that it is ultimately the public who will determine his fate in office. Singh stated, “If anyone is to remove me, then the public will remove me, not him,” reaffirming his confidence in the support he receives from the electorate and Prime Minister Rabuka.
The discord between Singh and Chaudhry reflects broader issues facing Fiji’s sugar industry, which is grappling with declining production and operational inefficiencies. Singh has previously defended his position by highlighting his extensive experience as a cane farmer and the critical need for maintaining the aging sugar mills, some of which are over 150 years old.
