The Sugar Industry Tribunal has announced the expected termination dates for the 2025 crushing season at the Lautoka and Labasa sugar mills after consultations with the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). Tribunal Registrar Timothy Brown confirmed that these dates comply with Regulation 4.5(c)(ii) of the Master Award.
The Lautoka Mill is projected to end its crushing operations on January 1, 2026, while the Labasa Mill is set to conclude by November 24, 2025. Mr. Brown noted that these deadlines are dependent on the mills’ operational performance, and the Tribunal will closely monitor both harvesting and crushing progress leading up to the final decisions.
A final order to cease crushing at each mill will be issued seven days before the anticipated finish date, following further discussions involving the FSC and the Sugar Cane Growers Council. This ongoing dialogue highlights the collaborative efforts needed to facilitate a seamless transition between crushing seasons.
This announcement comes as the sugar industry continues to engage in discussions about operational efficiencies, an essential concern as stakeholders focus on improving productivity and responding to evolving market demands. With the 2025 season on the horizon, the cooperative spirit among the Tribunal, FSC, and sugarcane growers fosters optimism for the future, suggesting a commitment to ongoing collaboration and enhancements within Fiji’s sugar industry.
