The sugar industry is set to experience renewed efforts for revitalization under the incoming Minister Tomasi Tunabuna, as confirmed by outgoing Minister Charan Jeath Singh. This transition follows their recent discussions in India, where future plans for the industry were a key focus.

During his time as minister, Singh highlighted the significance of continuing the initiatives he established, particularly the 15 assistance programs launched over the last three years. He expressed optimism about the potential rebound in sugar cane production, projecting an increase from around 1.3 million tonnes to 1.5 million tonnes this year—an uplift of 200,000 tonnes.

Singh is confident that with ongoing commitment and effort, the industry can aim to restore production levels to the previously achieved figure of 2.5 million tonnes within the next five years. Despite acknowledging the global challenges facing the sugar sector, he maintained a positive outlook, underscoring the importance of dedication to advancing production.

A major component of Singh’s vision includes the establishment of a state-of-the-art sugar mill, which is crucial for reaching the targeted production of 2.5 million tonnes. The new minister will have the vital task of overseeing this multi-million dollar project, with the facility planned for the Western Division in areas such as Rakiraki, Tavua, or Ba.

As Singh prepares to take on the Public Enterprises portfolio on January 19, he hands the sugar sector to Minister Tunabuna, who will build on the solid groundwork laid during Singh’s administration. The future of the sugar industry looks promising, with new opportunities for growth and investment on the horizon, suggesting a proactive and hopeful path forward for this critical sector.
