Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the creation of a Parliamentary Select Committee on the Sugar Industry, highlighting its necessity in ensuring the livelihoods of countless Fijian citizens. Speaking at the Sugar Cane Farmers Awards in Lautoka, Mr. Rabuka reaffirmed the Coalition government’s dedication to rejuvenating the sector, with a vision of transforming it into a modern and sustainable industry.
Taking on the role of chair for the newly established committee, Mr. Rabuka emphasized that its purpose goes beyond mere procedures. He stated, “This is a necessary and urgent step to safeguard the livelihood of thousands of Fijians and to chart a sustainable path forward, thus restoring confidence in our sugar industry.” The sugar industry is not only a vital economic pillar for Fiji but also serves as a significant social and cultural foundation, having contributed to the nation for over a century.
In his address, the Prime Minister praised the resilience of local farmers, who have endured challenges such as cyclones, droughts, and unstable global markets.
