Fiji Sugarcane Growers Receive Record Payout Amid Government Top-Ups

Fiji Sugar Industry Delivers Record Per Tonne Payout for Farmers

The Sugar Industry Tribunal has delivered promising news for sugarcane growers, announcing a remarkable final cane payment for the 2024 season, which will reach an impressive $101.13 per tonne. This payout marks one of the highest figures recorded in the history of the industry, signaling positive momentum for the sector. Timothy Brown, a spokesperson for the Tribunal, reported that the net share of cane proceeds this season has totaled $117,023,635, equating to approximately $87.86 per tonne.

To date, the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has issued payments totaling $91.66 per tonne to farmers, which encompasses various components: $43.06 for delivery, $14.35 for the second payment, $12.22 for the third payment, and $17.03 for the fourth payment. Additionally, a government top-up of $5.00 is expected in May 2025. An additional final payment of $1.20 per tonne will be added on October 15, 2025, bringing the cumulative total payout to $92.86 per tonne.

The government’s ongoing commitment to the sugar industry is underscored by an additional top-up of $8.27 per tonne, ensuring that farmers receive a total well above the guaranteed price of $85 per tonne. Brown emphasized that this unprecedented payout reflects the government’s dedication to supporting the sugar sector and the welfare of its growers.

This season’s developments bring optimism, particularly in light of the recent hardships faced by farmers, including adverse weather that has historically hindered production. While earlier forecasts indicated a potential decline in payments, projecting figures of $71.41 per tonne for 2025, the current financial backing reveals a strong resilience within Fiji’s sugarcane farming community.

The sustained financial assistance is crucial in alleviating immediate concerns for farmers and highlights a broader commitment from the government aimed at enhancing the stability and sustainability of Fiji’s agricultural sector. The combined efforts of the dedicated sugarcane growers and continued governmental support present a hopeful outlook for a flourishing future in the sugar industry.
