Eight farmers in Fiji’s Western Division are poised to gain from the New Farmer Assistance and Lease Premium Renewal grants, a strategic initiative by the Coalition Government aimed at revitalizing and fortifying the nation’s sugar farming communities. The grants were awarded earlier this week by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, who underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the cane sector and providing essential resources to farmers.
Under the Coalition Government’s recent leadership, cane farmers have reaped substantial financial rewards, achieving three of the highest cane payment rates in Fiji’s history. The payments reached $91.38 per tonne in 2022, climbed to $105.08 per tonne in 2023, and were recorded at $101.13 per tonne the previous year. These notable financial gains signify the government’s comprehensive approach to enhancing the income stability of individuals engaged in sugar production.
To further elevate national sugar cane production, the government has set an ambitious goal of increasing output by 200,000 tonnes each year. This initiative will be bolstered by improvements in mill efficiency, better logistics, enhanced governance, and superior field support for farmers, fostering a more robust agricultural framework.
The recent distribution of grants is part of the New Farmer and Lease Premium Assistance Programme, which has benefitted a total of 587 farmers across Fiji, providing $2.7 million in assistance. In the Western Division alone, eight farmers received a combined amount of $43,479, while 16 more farmers in Labasa are anticipated to receive $78,473 in the coming week.
Singh, who also serves as the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage, and Public Enterprises, is adjusting his responsibilities to better address the diverse needs of Fiji’s communities. This role expansion is expected to enhance his effectiveness in supporting the agricultural sector and promoting cultural harmony within the nation. The ongoing initiatives reflect a hopeful future for Fiji’s sugar industry, cultivating both economic growth and community support.
