The National Farmers Union (NFU) has initiated a call for an investigation into serious allegations regarding arson attempts at the Lautoka and Rarawai sugar mills. NFU General Secretary Mahendra Chaudhry has also urged for scrutiny of Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh, accusing him of spreading false information and inciting fear within the sugar sector.
Chaudhry emphasized the gravity of Singh’s claims, suggesting they lack any supporting evidence. He argued that the allegations point to a failure on the minister’s part to address the real issues impacting the sugar industry. According to the National Fire Authority, fire incidents at the Rarawai mill were attributed to diesel fuel, machinery, and electrical components, rather than the minister’s speculative theories.
This tension has only escalated, as earlier reports highlighted Singh’s serious concerns about intentional arson attacks on sugarcane farms, which have led to the destruction of significant acreage. With over 5,000 tonnes of sugarcane burned in recent months, these deliberate acts pose grave risks not just to individual farmers but to the wider agricultural landscape.
Additionally, the NFU has raised alarms over operational inefficiencies at the Lautoka Sugar Mill, which has struggled with mechanical failures, leading to substantial losses for farmers. Chaudhry criticized the continued shutdowns at the mill, asserting the need for accountability from both Singh and management to prevent further setbacks.
Despite these ongoing challenges, there remains a beacon of hope. Recent discussions highlight a commitment to improvement, as the government is preparing a rehabilitation package aimed at supporting affected farmers with financial assistance. This initiative underlines the importance of resilience and collective efforts among agricultural stakeholders to secure a more stable future for Fiji’s sugar industry.
In the face of adversity, the collaboration of farmers, the government, and industry leaders offers potential pathways for the revitalization of Fiji’s sugar sector, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous environment for all.
