The recent surge of arson incidents targeting sugar cane farms in Fiji has put significant pressure on the Lautoka sugar mill, as stated by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry. During a Parliamentary address on Monday, he assured that, despite the ongoing challenges, all sugarcane will be processed at the Lautoka mill.
Minister Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing cane from affected farmers spanning districts from Rakiraki to Tavua and Ba, allowing for a two-quota processing system per farm each day. He also reassured lorry drivers that all associated transport costs would be covered, aiming to alleviate any financial burdens resulting from these recent disruptions.
In light of the arson threats, the Fiji Sugar Corporation is striving to support farmers whose crops have been lost. Singh highlighted the operational limitations posed by relying on a single mill for cane processing, expressing concern for local farmers while affirming that the factory’s capacity is the determining factor for increased quotas. His team at the Fiji Sugar Corporation is working diligently to support farmers and manage the logistics of crushed cane.
Moreover, Singh provided an optimistic outlook regarding the Ba sugar mill, which has been undergoing maintenance. He noted that if parts are delivered on schedule, the mill could resume operations in about two months. The government has already initiated communication with insurance providers regarding coverage for the damages, acknowledging that the situation at the Lautoka mill is exacerbated by the absence of the Rakiraki mill’s operations.
