Fiji Strengthens UN Peacekeeping With Two Key Appointments

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has reinforced its commitment to international peacekeeping with the recent promotion and appointment of two notable officers to significant roles within the United Nations. Colonel Daunivakasala Kalitabua Ravunakana has assumed the position of Military and Police Advisor to Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. His impressive career spans over three decades of dedicated service, which includes deployments to various international missions across Lebanon, Iraq, Timor-Leste, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula. He holds degrees from the Royal Military College Duntroon in Australia and the National Defence University of the People’s Liberation Army in China, as well as advanced qualifications in Strategic and Security Studies.

In addition, Captain Merelesita Cakau has been elevated to the rank of Major and will soon serve as a Military Observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). Major Cakau’s promotion underscores Fiji’s progressive approach towards enhancing gender representation within global peacekeeping missions, reflecting the nation’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and leadership diversity.

Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the RFMF, offered his congratulations to both officers, praising their professionalism and dedication. He emphasized that their roles reaffirm Fiji’s steadfast dedication to international peace, stability, and cooperation under the United Nations framework.

These appointments not only signify individual achievements but also highlight Fiji’s longstanding history and continued involvement in global peacekeeping efforts, which dates back to 1978. This legacy reinforces Fiji’s reputation as a key player in contributing to international stability, fostered by the professionalism and commitment exhibited by its military personnel.

Overall, the RFMF’s commitment to excellence in peacekeeping is promising for the future, showcasing how smaller nations like Fiji can make significant contributions to global security efforts, thereby instilling hope for continued success in international peace initiatives.
