Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken decisive action in response to serious allegations surrounding the Fiji Sports Council, resulting in the immediate dismissal of Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru. Furthermore, Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure, the chief executive officer of the Fiji Sports Council, has been suspended as investigations into allegations of abuse of office and misuse of funds begin.

In a statement, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the necessity of these actions to ensure an independent investigation can be conducted without interference. He stated, “In light of the seriousness of the allegations raised, and to ensure that due process is respected… I have dismissed Honourable Jese Saukuru from his position as Minister for Youth and Sports, effective immediately.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing issues related to public office with utmost seriousness. He asserted that the integrity of public office and the management of public resources are essential principles that must be upheld by all public officials.

In an effort to maintain continuity within the ministry, Mr. Rabuka has assumed the Youth and Sports portfolio temporarily, ensuring that the operations of the ministry proceed without disruption while the investigation unfolds. This proactive approach underscores the government’s intention to uphold accountability and transparency within its ranks.

The move reflects a growing emphasis on integrity in public service, reinforcing the importance of maintaining high standards of conduct among officials. As investigations progress, the hope is that these actions will restore public confidence in the handling of public resources and the overall governance of sports in Fiji.
