Fiji Signs MOU to Turn Taveuni Lands into Profitable Agriculture

A significant agreement has been formalized to enhance agricultural development on Taveuni Island, with the Fijian Government committing to provide structured support for the landowners of Naselesele Village. This new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with the yavusa o Wainikeli, the trustee of the landowning unit of Naselesele, on September 9, 2025. Agriculture and Waterways Minister Tomasi Tunabuna announced this collaboration during a parliamentary session, outlining the plan to develop approximately 1,182 acres of trust land in four blocks within the village.

Minister Tunabuna emphasized that the initiative aims to transition this land into productive agricultural use, thereby generating income for landowning members and establishing a model that other communities can replicate. Taveuni, often referred to as the “garden island of Fiji,” is responsible for over 50 percent of Fiji’s taro exports and is also a significant source of yaqona, fruits, vegetables, and spices.

The MOU focuses on key areas including land-use planning, on-farm visits, crop research, pest and irrigation management, improvements to farm-to-market roads, access to necessary tools and seedlings, and environmental safeguards. Funding will be sourced through capital programs, with ministry extension officers overseeing the implementation of the project.

During a three-year pilot phase, landowners have committed to dedicating the land solely for commercial agriculture. If successful, this model could be expanded to other regions across Fiji, including the smaller islands. The initiative will also tackle soil fertility issues through agroforestry research and will include programs to address the kava dieback problem.

Minister Tunabuna expressed that this MOU transcends a mere document, symbolizing a collective belief that inclusive and innovative agricultural practices are essential for Fiji’s growth. This initiative is poised to not only enhance productivity and economic stability but also empower local communities, reinforcing a sustainable approach to land use and agricultural development.

Through the collaboration between the government and the landowners, there is a hopeful outlook for the future of agriculture in Taveuni, ensuring that traditional farming strengths are transformed into modern, commercially viable ventures that can benefit the entire community.
