Fiji is reaffirming its commitment to gender equality, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stressing the need for empowerment of women as a non-negotiable goal. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly during the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, Rabuka underscored the ongoing issues of violence, discrimination, and inequality faced by women, despite their crucial roles in society.
Highlighting the significance of the 1995 Beijing Conference, Rabuka noted its impact on global efforts for women’s rights, citing Fiji’s legislative progress such as the Domestic Violence Act 2009, the Child Welfare Act 2010, and the Employment Relations Act as evidence of commitment to protecting women, children, and workers.
Rabuka also emphasized political commitment and leadership as essential for integrating gender equality into governmental frameworks. He outlined plans to reinforce the Department of Women, Children, and Social Protection and reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to the Beijing Platform’s goals, which include fighting poverty, advancing education and health, promoting economic empowerment, and eliminating violence against women.
The Prime Minister envisions a future where gender equality in Fiji is achieved, ensuring a more equitable society for future generations. The Beijing Platform continues to serve as a worldwide model with priorities in political participation and health, crucial for women’s progress.
This renewed commitment is echoed by other leaders, like Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya, who, at various international forums, has reiterated the importance of addressing deep-rooted patriarchy and gender-based violence. Despite women making up 57% of tertiary graduates, significant obstacles persist, requiring systemic changes, including a new five-year initiative for gender equality accountability.
With a strong focus on combatting gender-based violence and enhancing women’s roles in leadership and the economy, Fiji’s proactive stance promises significant strides toward achieving gender equality. This ongoing dedication is a promising step toward improving the quality of life for women and girls, aiming for a society where gender equality is seamlessly incorporated into daily life.
