The Fijian government is taking noteworthy actions to assist local communities and sugarcane farmers as the Diwali festival draws near, underlining a theme of unity and compassion. Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, revealed that more than 10,200 sugarcane farmers will benefit from a special pre-Diwali payment. This includes a government addition of $9.47 per tonne, raising the total earnings for the 2024 crop to $101.13 per tonne.
In an unprecedented move, the government has also implemented pre-season billing for sugarcane farmers, which has already aided over 57 farmers with a distribution of $101,725 throughout Fiji. Singh emphasized that Diwali celebrates the diversity of Fiji, bringing families from different ethnic backgrounds together to honor love and community spirit.
Moreover, the government is enhancing community empowerment through the Multi-Ethnic Affairs Community Grant Program, which has earmarked $2 million this year for grassroots projects spanning various places of worship and community centers. Singh encouraged all Fijians to embody the true spirit of Diwali by extending kindness to those facing challenges, underlining the importance of solidarity during this festive time.
This initiative aligns with previous government efforts aimed at uplifting sugarcane farmers, including a record payment of $105.08 per tonne earlier this year, marking the highest in the sugar industry’s history. The increased payments target ongoing challenges faced by farmers, particularly those exacerbated by climate change.
The strategic measures undertaken by the government indicate a hopeful future for Fiji’s sugarcane industry and demonstrate a dedication to supporting vital stakeholders. As the nation readies itself for the Diwali celebration, these initiatives offer not only financial relief but also a chance for the community to unite in a significant and joyful manner.
