Alivereti Nainoca is fulfilling his dreams by training with some of the most renowned players in Fiji’s rugby sevens history. The young athlete, a new addition to the extended squad of the Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team, describes the experience as both surreal and motivating as he navigates the high-paced world of international sevens rugby.
Nainoca has rapidly adapted to the rigorous environment under the guidance of Coach Osea Kolinisau, who is pleased with the seamless integration of new talents into the team. Expressing his excitement, Nainoca said, “I’m so happy to have been considered to be part of the extended team. I used to watch these players and now get to train alongside them, it’s such a great feeling to be with the team I used to only watch on television.”
With aspirations of making a mark in the sport at an international level, Nainoca views this as just the beginning of a greater journey. “My dream is to not only reach here but go and play in other countries as well, God willing,” he shared. Transitioning from playing rugby union (15s) to sevens has been a learning curve for him, but he feels enriched by the new insights gained during his time with the squad.
The team’s preparation is well-timed, as they prepare to head to Tauranga, New Zealand, for the Ignite 7s tournament this week. This tournament serves as a crucial warm-up before the final squad selection for the HSBC 7s Series opener in Dubai. Kolinisau has pointed out that the event will allow fresh faces like Nainoca to showcase their talent and earn their place in the final lineup.
