Excitement is building as the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s sevens team prepares for the upcoming season, with head coach Osea Kolinisau announcing a strategic introduction of new players. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance squad depth as the team embraces a transitional year.
Two debutants, Nacani Boginisoko and Douglas Daveta, are poised to make their national sevens debuts this week. Kolinisau highlighted the significance of these new additions, emphasizing that they are just the first of several players expected to join the squad throughout the season.
“We’ve got two debutants this week, so we’re still building on depth, especially this year’s transitioning. This won’t be our last debutante for the season,” Kolinisau stated, indicating a commitment to cultivating emerging talent.
The squad’s response to the transition has been encouraging, with players arriving in excellent condition and quickly adapting to preparations in Singapore. As competition approaches, the team has shifted their focus from intense physical training to refining technical skills and execution.
“It’s not about hammering them or trying to get more into the tank. It’s about tapering down, shepherding things up, and getting our technical stuff right,” explained Kolinisau. Set-piece accuracy and team structure have become essential areas of focus, particularly in defense and attack, as the coaches work to enhance the team’s overall performance.
Kolinisau noted that training sessions are tailored to acclimatize players to local conditions, with an emphasis on sharpening combinations as they gear up for competition. The men’s side is set to begin its campaign this Saturday at 4:32 PM against Great Britain, followed by matches against Spain at 7:58 PM and South Africa at 11:46 PM.
