The Fiji Airways men’s 7s team, led by captain Jerry Matana, is gearing up for the forthcoming Singapore and Perth legs of the World Rugby Sevens Series with an emphasis on improvement and discipline. Following their recent performance at the Coral Coast 7s, Matana has pinpointed discipline as a key area for development.
“We’re now ready for the two legs, Singapore and Perth. We need to work on our discipline; that is something I believe we lacked during the Coral Coast 7s. At the start of our training week, we’re working on our weaknesses,” Matana stated.
Reflecting on their third-place finishes in Dubai and Cape Town, Matana recognized that minor errors have cost the team in vital moments. To address these challenges, they have ramped up their training, focusing on refining their skills and addressing weaknesses to secure victories in the upcoming tournaments.
“We made silly mistakes, and poor discipline cost us at crucial times,” he noted.
In the upcoming events, Fiji has drawn into Pool A with South Africa, Great Britain, and Spain. They will kick off their campaign against Great Britain at 4:32 pm on Saturday, followed by matches against Spain at 7:58 pm and South Africa at 11:46 pm.
The Fijiana 7s team will also compete, facing off against the champions from Cape Town, Australia, as well as the USA and Japan in their pool. The competition will take place over the weekend, promising exciting matches ahead for both teams. With a strong focus on improvement, the Fiji teams are anticipated to bring their best performances to the field.
