He highlighted the pressing need for these farmers to transition from traditional subsistence methods to more commercially viable practices, pointing out the ongoing struggles many still face in making this shift. Seruiratu advocated for a thorough review of the existing support policies aimed at assisting these farmers, questioning how many have successfully graduated to a more commercial farming status and stressing the need for enhanced support for those who show improvement, regardless of their prior assistance.
At the core of his message was the call for the implementation of incubation programs that provide essential training and facilitate the transfer of innovative technologies to farmers. He stated, “With innovative technology and shared knowledge, we must accelerate the transfer of this knowledge to our farmers.” Additionally, Seruiratu suggested that certain services might be more effectively handled by external stakeholders, allowing the Ministry of Agriculture to better focus on its primary functions. He acknowledged the crucial role of the Crop and Livestock Council in fostering a dynamic agro-business environment in Fiji.
This emphasis on a shift towards product-oriented agricultural practices aligns with broader discussions in the country surrounding agricultural development. Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica has echoed similar views, emphasizing the necessity of aligning agricultural operations with market demands to boost efficiency and market access. Kamikamica observed that a large portion of Fiji’s agricultural output does not reach formal markets, underscoring the need for a more responsive agricultural model that meets market demands.
Enhancing market access for farmers is essential for economic stability and improving food security, which are critical considerations for a nation where agriculture plays a vital role in everyday life. Farmers have expressed their need for better infrastructure, access to resources, and more governmental support, particularly as they face challenges such as climate change and variable international market prices.
