As Fiji prepares for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for July, the nation’s swimming team is ramping up its preparations with increasing intensity. A total of eight athletes—four male and four female—will represent Fiji at this prestigious event, creating heightened competition among swimmers vying for these limited spots.

To decide which swimmers will proudly represent their country in Glasgow, athletes are currently showcasing their talents at national competitions, including the Grand Prix and Open Nationals. Recent Grand Prix events at the Damodar National Aquatic Centre in Suva, held on January 31 and the previous Saturday, have been pivotal for many aspiring swimmers.

National swimming coach Willie Elaisa has observed a promising emergence of younger talent within the sport, stating, “The younger ones, I can see them making their way up.” He emphasized that the pathway to success at the Commonwealth Games is demanding and requires unwavering dedication. “Those who are serious about going to Glasgow will stand out,” he noted.

Elaisa is filled with optimism regarding the future of Fiji’s swimming program. He underscored the need for a collaborative effort among coaches, administrators, and the athletes themselves, urging them to adopt a mindset that fosters belief in their potential. Drawing inspiration from the national rugby sevens team, which carries a strong expectation of success, he emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving their goals.

This collective spirit and determination among coaches and athletes fosters hope that Fiji’s swimmers will not only compete but excel at the Commonwealth Games. As the selection process unfolds and preparations continue, there is a rising wave of optimism surrounding the potential for remarkable achievements on the podium in Glasgow.
