Authorities in Fiji are hailing a major achievement in their ongoing battle against drug trafficking, following the monumental seizure of cocaine estimated to be worth approximately A$780 million (FJ$1.2 billion). The operation, which resulted in the recovery of 2.64 tonnes of cocaine, took place during a significant raid in Vatia, Tavua, last week.

The successful bust was orchestrated by the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department in close collaboration with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Forensic investigations confirmed that all 2,630 parcels uncovered during the raid were indeed filled with cocaine.

In connection to this case, six individuals have been charged, including four from Ecuador and two local men from Veisaru, Ba. They were presented at the Rakiraki Magistrate’s Court following their arrest. Law enforcement had been engaged in surveillance and gathering intelligence for several months, initially identifying the suspicious shipment originating from South America as early as December 2025.

On January 15, police intercepted a vehicle that was transporting the illicit cargo, which led to a subsequent raid on a boat near Vatia Wharf. This operation is now recognized as one of the largest drug seizures in the nation’s history. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu highlighted the essential role of regional collaboration and intelligence-sharing in dismantling transnational criminal networks.

The investigation is still active, with authorities pursuing further suspects linked to this extensive smuggling operation. This success not only showcases the capabilities of Fiji’s law enforcement but also underscores the significance of global partnerships in tackling complex criminal activities, inspiring hope for continued victories in the fight against drug trafficking.
