Sila Balawa, General Secretary of the People’s Alliance, has commended Manoa Kamikamica’s decision to resign from his ministerial position, labeling it an “honourable act” that enhances integrity within public office. Kamikamica, who stepped down as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade this week, faced serious allegations from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), including charges of perjury and providing false information to a public servant.
Balawa described Kamikamica’s resignation as a rare example of accountability in Fijian politics, expressing admiration for the move. He stated, “He still remains a Member of Parliament, but stepping down as a Minister means he’s allowing for investigations to proceed unhindered. He has done something that has been missing for decades, doing the right thing.”
He further highlighted that Kamikamica’s choice sets a significant precedent for other leaders, reminding citizens of a time when resigning during investigations was not uncommon. “It’s the sign of a good leader, one who is willing to step aside and let things be investigated before moving forward,” Balawa added.
Kamikamica’s resignation arises in light of allegations tied to the contentious appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner. Despite stepping down from his ministerial role, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reassured party members that Kamikamica will continue to serve as deputy party leader and remain engaged in Parliament under the People’s Alliance.
This incident reflects a growing emphasis on political integrity and accountability in Fiji, with many citizens expressing hope that it could catalyze broader reforms within the government. The recent developments surrounding Kamikamica’s resignation represent a pivotal moment in Fiji’s political environment, suggesting a commitment to transparency and governance improvements that align with the public’s desire for a trustworthy political framework.
The renewed focus on accountability bodes well for the future, as it illustrates a shared aspiration among the Fijian people for a transparent and stable governance structure that meets their expectations.
