The Fiji Police Force has reported a significant decrease in illicit drug offenses, noting a 30% reduction from August to October compared to the same period last year. This notable decline is primarily attributed to Operation Sasamaki, an initiative launched in March that is currently active across all five police divisions in Fiji.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu pointed out that this reduction is the result of a focused crackdown on drug-related crimes, achieved through enhanced enforcement efforts and regular monthly assessments of the operation’s strategies. Tudravu emphasized the importance of collaboration with community members and regional partners, stating that effectively addressing drug-related offenses requires more than enforcement alone—it calls for a comprehensive approach to improve information sharing and engagement.
Operation Sasamaki has already produced impressive outcomes, including the seizure of nearly five tonnes of marijuana. However, the Commissioner expressed concern about the rising cases of methamphetamine, highlighting the need for continued vigilance against evolving drug trends.
The proactive approach adopted by the Fiji Police underscores the critical role of community involvement in the fight against drug issues. Engaging local residents has proven vital, as their cooperation facilitates police operations and leads to significant drug seizures and arrests.
The partnership between law enforcement and the community bodes well for enhancing safety throughout Fiji. The ongoing commitment of the Fiji Police Force, coupled with community support, paints a hopeful picture for sustained progress against drug-related crime, ultimately contributing to a healthier and safer future for all citizens.
