Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto brought this issue to light, indicating that the country largely relies on the informal support of family networks and the general vigilance of police to track the return of individuals deemed high-risk.

This pressing issue gained notoriety in October 2022 when Australian media highlighted the distressing case of a 39-year-old Fijian man who faced charges for sexually assaulting a young girl while in a childcare facility overseas. Naupoto revealed that several deportees were involved in this situation, further amplifying the need for a systematic approach to manage the influx of high-risk individuals, particularly in instances of mass deportations.
He acknowledged that, while Fijian authorities typically manage deportees effectively due to their small numbers, the absence of a legal framework for registering or monitoring returning sex offenders poses a significant challenge. Naupoto advocated for the establishment of a formal register, which could facilitate tracking and monitoring these offenders more effectively. Without such a system, the risk to public safety remains a critical concern.
