In a recent parliamentary address, Professor Biman Prasad, leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and Government MP, underscored the critical necessity for electoral reforms in Fiji to rebuild public trust and guarantee fairness in upcoming elections. Drawing on his experiences from his tenure in opposition and previous general elections, Prasad articulated concerns that align with findings from a recent electoral report.
Prasad highlighted how the current electoral laws are susceptible to manipulation, stating, “When we talk about free and fair elections… we in the opposition used to point out laws that could be weaponised.” He referred to some provisions in the electoral framework as “stupid laws,” arguing that without amendments, these regulations would continue to undermine the electoral system.
The call for reform transcends merely achieving free and fair elections; it is fundamentally about ensuring electoral integrity. “It’s not just about free and fair. It’s about electoral integrity,” he asserted, pressing lawmakers to acknowledge the need for heightened standards in the electoral process.
Additionally, Prasad tackled the topic of previously imposed restrictions on international observer groups. He criticized the stipulations requiring these groups to adhere to government-imposed terms, which effectively excluded established organizations such as the Commonwealth and the European Union from overseeing elections. This policy permitted the entry of lesser-known regional observers, subsequently diminishing the independent oversight crucial for a credible electoral process.
Prasad urged Parliament to engage deeply with the electoral report’s recommendations and to implement reforms that would bolster transparency, neutrality, and independence at all election stages. His strong advocacy for these reforms highlights a broader dedication to not only ensuring free and fair elections but also to preserving the integrity of Fiji’s democratic framework, which is vital for the nation’s future prosperity.
