Police have submitted an investigation file regarding alleged sedition involving former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). This confirmation comes from police spokesperson Ana Naisoro, who noted that the file was sent on January 7, 2026.

According to the ODPP, they initially received the file in February 2023, after which they reviewed the evidence and returned it to the police with recommendations for further investigation. The ODPP clarified that the file has been sent back to them for additional analysis, and it is currently under review in accordance with standard procedures.

The investigation centers on allegations involving Mr. Bainimarama and Mr. Qiliho reportedly attempting to incite military intervention following the general elections in December 2022. Reports indicate that during negotiations for a coalition government among the People’s Alliance Party, the National Federation Party, and SODELPA, the two men had allegedly called for a military presence on the streets of Suva.

This ongoing inquiry highlights the tensions in the political landscape following the recent elections and reflects the judiciary and law enforcement’s commitment to investigating serious allegations thoroughly, ensuring accountability within the highest levels of government. The outcome of the review by the ODPP may have significant implications for the political situation in Fiji moving forward.
