The United Kingdom has announced its decision to uphold the UK Global Tariff while simultaneously increasing the raw sugar import quota by an additional 65,000 tonnes, starting January 1, 2026. This development was highlighted by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, during a recent parliamentary session.
Singh emphasized that Fiji will continue to benefit from duty-free access to the UK under the UK–Pacific Economic Partnership Agreement for the next eight years, marking a significant trade and diplomatic achievement for the nation. “This is a major diplomatic and trade victory for Fiji and a clear vote of confidence in our sugar industry,” he stated.
In a related update, Singh announced that the Rarawai Mill is set to resume crushing operations today. He indicated that this resumption is a promising sign of the effectiveness of the government’s rehabilitation efforts, reinforcing that the administration is committed to revitalizing the sugar industry.
This positive momentum signals an encouraging outlook for Fiji’s sugar sector, showcasing the potential for growth and sustainability in light of favorable trade conditions.
