Fiji Clinches Group A Victory in Tahiti, Secures Semi-Final Berth in OFC U-19 Women’s Championship

Fiji Seals Group A Top Spot, Advances to OFC U-19 Women’s Championship Semi-Finals

Fiji delivered an impressive performance to secure a 2-1 win over Tonga, guaranteeing their top position in Group A at the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2025 in Tahiti. This victory not only secures Fiji’s progression to the semi-finals but confirms the Cook Islands as runners-up, pushing Tonga to compete in the 5th place play-off.

The match was pivotal for Tonga, who needed a win to maintain their semi-final ambitions. Despite a strong start, putting Fiji’s defense under early pressure, Fiji held their ground and quickly took control. Elesi Tabunase’s diving header put Fiji ahead in the 8th minute, and captain Sereana Naweni cemented their lead just three minutes later with a powerful strike. Tonga’s goalkeeper, Keira Wolfgramm, made several remarkable saves to prevent further damage, allowing Fiji to maintain a two-goal advantage at halftime.

Tonga regrouped in the second half, fortifying their defense and gaining momentum. Anela Makaafi’s impressive long-range goal in the 68th minute revived their hopes, but despite their persistence and creating tense moments for Fiji, they were unable to find an equalizer.

Fiji now prepares for a semi-final match against either Tahiti or New Caledonia. Meanwhile, the Cook Islands anticipate a challenging encounter with defending champions New Zealand, with both matches determining who will compete in the final.

This victory underscores Fiji’s considerable talent and their strategic approach in regional competitions. Building on previous achievements, like their triumph against Tonga in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, Fiji showcases skilled players such as Elesi Tabunase and Sereana Naweni, who continue to make significant impacts. Their promising performance and strong team dynamics signal a bright future in upcoming challenges. This success story of both resilience and skill is a source of inspiration and drives excitement for women’s football in the region, fostering support and enthusiasm for the sport.
