The Ministry of Health & Medical Services has clarified that Fiji remains safe from the Nipah virus, reassuring the public that the risk level is low, despite recent cases reported in West Bengal, India. The Ministry acknowledged two confirmed cases of the virus, but confirmed that the situation has been managed effectively.

Following these cases, authorities have identified 196 individuals who were in close contact with the infected persons. All contacts have been monitored and tested, displaying no symptoms and returning negative results. It was also noted that no additional Nipah virus cases related to this outbreak have been reported in other countries, and China has not seen any instances this year.

According to the World Health Organization, outbreaks of the Nipah virus have historically occurred in India since 2001, particularly in the states of West Bengal and Kerala, often related to fruit bat populations. Transmission can occur from infected animals to humans through contaminated food, and in some cases, through human-to-human contact. Symptoms can range from mild, such as fever and headache, to severe conditions like pneumonia and encephalitis, with a high mortality rate of between 40% to 75%.

In light of the current circumstances, the Ministry emphasized that there is no immediate danger to Fiji. They encouraged anyone returning from West Bengal who develops symptoms to seek medical advice promptly.

The Ministry is working closely with the World Health Organization and international agencies to monitor developments. They have committed to keeping the public updated if there are any changes in the risk level. Furthermore, the Ministry urged the community to rely on official sources of information and to avoid spreading misinformation. This strategy is aimed at ensuring public safety while keeping everyone informed about the Nipah virus.

This proactive stance highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation in public health, aiming to foster an informed community and mitigate any potential health risks.
