The Fiji Rugby Football Union is actively tackling significant challenges as it seeks to reform its governance and operational tactics. Acting CEO Koli Sewabu commented on the organization’s progress following their recent General Assembly, emphasizing that the year ahead will focus on addressing longstanding legacy issues while becoming accustomed to the newly established governance framework.
Sewabu explained that the current board has inherited many existing agreements, which has created a need for a careful balance between fulfilling these commitments and understanding the new administrative structure. “There were already agreements in place prior to our leadership taking over. We needed to respect those agreements while adapting to how Fiji Rugby now operates,” he noted.
A major concern for the union has been compliance, as several unions have faced difficulties in meeting the required standards. Sewabu remarked, “There were game management issues, and many unions were not fully compliant this year. We faced a dilemma since enforcing strict measures could lead to fewer teams participating in our competitions, which prompted us to seek innovative solutions to collaborate with our unions.”
Problems with player registration and the lack of a comprehensive player database have also hindered effective operations. Recognizing the urgency, Sewabu affirmed that developing a robust database will be a priority in upcoming years to enhance pathways in primary, secondary, club, and provincial rugby.
Historically, the Fiji Rugby organization has not had a fully endorsed strategic plan, resulting in inconsistent management practices. Earlier this year, a symposium was held to engage stakeholders in crafting a new strategy, which is set to be finalized soon. “The objective is to start 2026 with a clearer vision and objectives that will guide us for the next decade,” Sewabu expressed.
By honing in on strategic planning and compliance, the Fiji Rugby Football Union is well-positioned to confront its challenges effectively.
